It's so much easier for students to learn eighth-note-based language than to deal with the non-quantized world of Rollins, Coleman, Bley etc, especially when you're dealing with the fact that institutions are expected to produce 'professional' musicians after such a limited amount of time. You can hear the shift in the rhythmic feel by comparing records from the 60's and 70's (Miles' Cellar Door band immediately comes to mind) to those artists' records who are 'schooled' from the 80's/90's etc. <br />That's not even mentioning the idea you brought up in your 'Where's the one' post: that so many people just don't work on a variety of rhythms that much. Firstly the idea of larger groupings of eighths into 5, 7, 9, 11 etc, and secondly exploring the divisions of the beat into 5, 7, 9 etc.Marc Hannafordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08610156181502423015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5526704657739088406.post-17714912011191532052009-05-14T03:45:00.000+01:002009-05-14T03:45:00.000+01:00here here Ronan, with you all the way.here here Ronan, with you all the way.stinklerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05294166344357748415noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5526704657739088406.post-42781488819022280852009-05-10T00:12:00.000+01:002009-05-10T00:12:00.000+01:00you have crystallized a misgiving i have about a l...you have crystallized a misgiving i have about a lot of contemporary jazz, flurries of uniform notes with a lack of rhythmic diversity.
